UNIT 1 - More Kanji

The remaining kanji we learn to write, this unit:

えん - the kanji for 'yen' (¥). Use this directly after a number.

~ねん / ~さい / とし - the kanji for 'year'. Can be used for years (e.g. 2023), age (e.g. 18y.o.). Use directly after a number. Make sure that the top and middle diagonal lines are the same length, and that the bottom one is longer.

ひゃく - kanji for '100'. Easy to remember because it looks like the number 100 when you rotate it to the left. Make sure the line on top is longer than the width of the 'box'.

せん - kanji for 1,000. Start every stroke where the red dot is on the image here.

~まん - kanji for 10,000. Make sure that the sweep is the last stroke you write, and not the hooked one! You also can't write 万 by itself. It's always ichiman if it's just 10,000, so 一万.

We say ~ねん when talking about a year (date), but even though we use the same kanji, ~ねん becomes ~さい when talking about age. For example; 7 years old is NOT 'ななねん', it's 'ななさい'.

4 is an exception, and is read as よねん, and NEVER よんねん, by the way!!

When saying you are '20 years old', にじゅうさい is good, but はたち is also used.

Using the kanji we know for the numbers, and some of these new ones, we can write the prices and amount of things in Kanji! Here are some examples and exercises you can try out yourself. Just make sure to cover the right part of the post when doing them, since the answers are there.

Please get a piece of paper and a pen out for this! Look back at the first kanji post for stroke orders.

Write the following in kanji:

1) 56

A) 五十六

2) 19

B) 十九

3) 74

C) 七十四

4) 100

D) 百

Now write these years in kanji:

1) 7 years old

A) 七年 (nana)

2) 2023

B) 二千二十三年

3) 1932

C) 千九百三十二年

4) 4

D) 四年 (yonen!!!)

5) 20 years old

E) 二十年 (hatachi / nijyuusai)

Finally, since prices are normally written using the arabic numeral system and the kanji for 'yen' after the number, please just write the kanji for 'yen'!

1) yen

A) 円

How well did you do out of /10?
